Train body and mind with aikido

Aikido is budo, a martial art based on traditional Japanese training methods. The techniques can be traced back to the samurai. However, Aikido is more than a martial art: it is a way to make your body flexible and your mind strong. In our dojo, we take our training very seriously, but fun comes first.

Experienced teachers

Lessons are taught by experienced, state-recognized teachers. Merlijn Torensma has the 4th dan (black belt), followed the training to teacher level 3 and 4 at Judo Bond Nederland (JBN) and is chairman of the national commission aikido at JBN. Gerard Cuperus has the 2nd dan (black belt), followed the training for teacher level 3 and is chairman of the committee for Noord Nederland.

Taking lessons

If you want to find out if aikido is for you, you are welcome to visit our dojo. The first two lessons are free of charge. Only then will you decide whether our way of training suits you and whether you want to enroll.

For a trial lesson, just stop by. For children ages 7 to 12, it is on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon. For youth ages 12 to 16, it is on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. For adults, it is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. or on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Dojo

We train in our own dojo located in Emmastate, Emmakade 59 in Leeuwarden. Please note that when you arrive you do not take the main entrance but the alley on the right side of the building.

Aikidoka wear a keikogi, a white aikido suit with a white belt. Ask your teacher where you can purchase one. If you are coming for a trial class, please bring sweatpants and a shirt. No shoes are allowed on the mat.
